i remember the dry sun in the canyon

just after sunrise,
i wiped the sand out of my eyes
the day before, we drove a jeep
in the flat sandy hot desert floor

canyon on fire with red rock
hardly any birds flapping
air so still, i reached my hand
out of the window to capture

the dry sand enriched air
my hair encrusted with baked
in sand--gritty dry hot sand
insidious dry hot sand

commanding all my senses
i day-dreamed playing icarus
in a play taken to the road
the leading man was a toad

whom i kissed--stirring
a feeling of belonging
one indian brave with wings
flapping a chord of candor

lifting off from the flat security
of a sandy forgiving floor
i flew high up into a crevice
of canyon reddish brown

all that had been lost the day before
was celebrated, was frantically found
in patches of clover, dandelions
growing out of one small miracle

high up in the canyon- a ledge
filled with angel's tears
removing the fears of victims
who forgot to look towards the sun

the challenges keep on belting
out tunes in the flashing of dry
desert song- tunes to slip into
while wearing the blues, blended

with the purples and golds of sunset
making the carved dips of chiseled rock
more than bearable
so high up in the canyon

we are encouraged to breathe
with a greater tenacity among
the blues theatre, clearing
the cobwebs of crashing

symbols upon the arrid
land of humble sages, rearranging
stones at the bottom of the canyon
making sounds like castanettes

can you dig it---the blues in the sky
echo, why why why
can you dig it- the blues in the sky
echo, why why why
