conversation with an earth angel- 'deja vu'
how far till the end of the road
as far as you wish to take it
does that mean
i'll be walking
the rest of my life- and still
never discover the living end
i am afraid you will be
walking the rest
of your life--and still
never discover the living end
as you know from being
at a familiar place--one
where you know you've
never been--
the light courses
through the pines and shines
in your eyes
for only a moment
and then you know
the circuitous
nature of this life---
of all our lives
pooling in the center
of a thirstydesert--
as one by one we enter
the living lake of everlasting lilies
eternity beckons for those
who know themselves
to be old capricious souls
without reason for being
but trees bend in high winds
in autumn- and the cool
streak of morning
reminds us
there is nothing
new under heaven
or upon this earth
but only to realize
with closed eyes:
we have all been here before
we have all been here before
she shuts the door on the life
she thought she was living
and holds strong the hand
of deja vu,
for she knows
the one who has been
giving truth without
asking for anything in return
is the one who will do cartwheels
on clay tennis courts by the sea
listening, to ancient cries of crustaceans
while she collects starfish, oysters, and clams
bones of sparrows
are left on the surface
of a dry abandoned baseball field
laid to rest
beneath mighty cypresses
not so long ago--
in a neighborhood
we have come to call "home"
