i can keep away from knowing

i can keep away from knowing
how very much you suffer
only as easily as i
keep away my own suffering

the fence keeps some
wild animals from entering
the sacred meadow

yet oh so many ghosts,
dogs, cats and unicorns
mico-manage to enter

sacred common ground
without the judging mind--
with both ease and difficulty

we too must pass through
the needle's eye-
the burnt red thread of humanity
acknowledging hurt misery pain

the joy that follows
can be likened
to a baby's breath-
a brave benediction-
how we gather precious pearls of rain

to keep my suffering away from you
is to keep a part of my heart
beating in an undecipherable language

to keep my suffering from you
is to never really fully love you
