the process of writing a poem
I awake and grab a mug of hot coffee, black, no sugar.
I open to the universe.
I say a prayer of thanks for my teachers and ancestors
who allowed me the blessing and miracle of this beautiful life.
Sitting in meditation, a theme for a poem immediately comes into view.
I write non-stop for five to ten minutes. Take another sip of coffee.
I go back and edit for punctuation/spelling/line-breaks changes.
I step away, and go about my day.
At the end of the day, I re-examine the poem.
Is it good enough to salvage? If so, it is shared.
