Since birth, the power of healing sound was all around us. Our parents cooing, singing, reading, a soft wind blowing, or the tea kettle piercing all represent some of our earliest experiences of being bathed in healing sound. Of course we heard other less soothing sounds, as we interacted more in the world: car horns blaring, leaf blowers wailing, people screaming.
To help balance our own minds and bodies from the onslaught of harsh sounds, as well as stressful situations, we naturally seek a greater quiet. This is found in the peace of green woods, the sweet songs of birds, simply listening to rain fall on a duck pond, or the natural healing sounds of the ocean, at the beach.
As apart of my healing journey, I have discovered that the spoken word, found in reciting poetry, as well as playing piano, chanting sanskrit prayers, and listening to a wide spectrum of various musical styles has created a healing oasis that I cannot be without.
I have gone so far as to compose music with a conscious intention to create healing sounds for both myself and my clients. Calling these gatherings, simply 'Sound Healing'~Entering the Sacred'... we sit together and listen...to the sounds...and bask in the quiet afterwards. A guided meditation both before the music and after, helps crystalize the healing experience. Then, after a period of time, we break the silence, with our voices, sharing our unique experience.
Where silence becomes more and more difficult to find in our world, its source of joy borders on the sacred for me. From a true place of silence, we can then experience the healing sounds more fully and deeply.
Consider carving out a half hour in your day to sit quietly in nature, or listen to music composed specifically for healing. You may find yourself with a greater level of peace, joy, and balance than ever before.
